The Experience

We are not the typical history class. We bring the whole experience with us; from minute details to overall sweeping atmosphere.  Our knowledge and impressions come from firsthand resources and researched museum pieces.

"I imagine that if young people were put upon a right method of reading history, it might be of singular advantage to them in the conduct of their future actions."
~The Maryland Gazette June 7, 1745

Bodger / Spoon Maker

The Bodger comes to events, with the idea of creating projects throughout the day. While working with tools that would have been available to a Bodger, Jay interacts with the public walking them through various steps of the process, explaining each tool, its use and how it has evolved. Using Joseph Moxon and Andre Roubo as guides he has created an impression that leaves little to the imagination. Through this impression Jay hopes to inspire other woodworkers to rethink traditional woodworking and keep this craft alive.

The Street Crier will walk your streets crying 'Skewers, Spoons and flippers ready made!' That is to say, selling handcrafted spoons, forks and spatulas. Along with these, colorful tapes in wool and silk dance in the wind - with 'Tapes! Garters! and Treen for sale!'

Tape Weaver / Home Life

The Tape Weaver demonstrates with great skill the craft of tape weaving.  Although an everyday item in the 18th Century, tape is hardly known today. Leigh Ann showcases the weaving process, the uses of tape and presents a fun interactive and hands on demonstration for children and adults. Tape weaving is considered by some, an introduction to the textile arts and can be easily included in any program!

Home Life: Historic Cooking is a program, designed by Leigh Ann to showcase historic foods and ingredients and how they were used. From simple side dishes to fancy desserts Leigh Ann can make your event's kitchen a central part of the event.  Make connections from how things were done then to how we have changed those same dishes for modern life.

Home Life: Herbals Within the daily scope of a woman's chores was making sure her family was healthy and safe. Using period herbs and spices, Leigh Ann creates historic remedies that would help aid sick family and friends until they got better, or the doctor was called. This lost art of holistic healing is coming back to popularity through Essential oils (not used in the demonstration) and is growing in popularity around the US.

Stone House History's Trading Post

New for 2024, we now offer a Trading Post Program! We have researched and recreated a Trading Post, based on several ledgers from Pennsylvania's frontier. Through the program, we offer insights into what living on the frontier entailed, as well as offer goods for sale - just like a historic trading post!

Past Programs

  Tavern Night!
This is a presentation (2023) where Stone House History hosted several living historians who focus on different aspects of Tavern Life. We brought with us, live historic music, a tavern keeper (drinks and food), and of course historic games! This evening was family friendly event!
Children's Games
Fun was not a stranger to Colonial Children.  With the Children's Games, first offered in 2017, we provided historically accurate games that teach math, reading and coordination skills. Quiet, loud, inside and outside games were brought and demonstrated. Children learned games of the past, leaving behind their modern technology and adults revisit games of their youth.

In 2023, Leigh Ann was asked to help create and teach a program for local homeschoolers, and scouts. This program was all about the history of Potatoes! Together, She and her students traveled back into the 18th Century learning about the tools used, facts about historic potatoes and then planted a large garden of Heritage Varieties. Fun was had by all and best of all, the students were welcomed back to the site for the annual Fall Spudfest event where they were able to dig up their potatoes!
